1929 Classic Downeast Cruiser
Designed by Albert Condon and built by Gray Boats in Thomaston, Maine in 1929, TOLLIE is an embodiment of the idea of “a classic of a bygone era”. She was built for cruising the coast of Maine, which she has successfully done for nearly 100 years. Her mere existence at this stage is testimony to her time-tested quality of construction, and wholesome design that has inspired past owners to restore her and maintain her as opposed to “upgrading” to a more modern boat.
Over recent decades, TOLLIE has undergone considerable structural restoration whereby many of the frames were sistered with new fastenings, the entire transom was replaced, the stem repaired, the ceiling in the fore peak completely replaced. TOLLIE’s interior has also been completely replaced by us over the years, with varnished interior trim with fiddles, all new furniture on both sides, doors, drawers and lockers, installation of an ABYC compliant holding tank system, head compartment, sink, head compartment door, icebox, butcher block counter tops, stove and galley lockers. The custom cabinetry extends to the pilot house, with several large storage drawers under the long bench seats.
The boat has excellent ventilation and lighting. The original bronze hatches all have screens, and the entire house can be enclosed with canvas which affords both privacy and insect-free ventilation. Doug Hylan also installed deck prisms in the cabin, a very unique feature which provides extensive natural light “below deck”.
Between the V-berth and the two long benches in the house TOLLIE can sleep 3-4 people. The bench seats have a system of framed slats which are hidden under the seat cushions during normal cruising. The slats can then be extended to make the bench into a wide berth, for a more comfortable sleeping area. The cockpit and house together have seating for 7-8 people with additional seating in the cabin below.
For electronics TOLLIE sports a Garmin 740S touchscreen chartplotter, Standard Horizon VHF radio with AIS, and depth sounder – all new in 2019.
For the past 20 years TOLLIE has been professionally maintained and improved at our yard.
