TIP YOUR CAP is built to the Doug Hylan’s BOWLER design and is a “cruising” version of his earlier TOP HAT design. These boats are descended from Harry Bryan’s inspired Handy Billy design, which in turn can trace its roots back to William Hand’s vee bottom designs from the early 20th century. One hundred years later, Hand would still recognize these boats – handsome, efficient in operation, sea kindly and somewhat improved by incorporation of a little extra beam, modern construction techniques and the availability of today’s wonderfully quiet and clean burning outboard motors.

TIP YOUR CAP is constructed using modern epoxy glued wood, fiberglass and Dynel cloth construction. Her bottom is marine plywood and her curvaceous topsides are strip planked. All is sheathed in Dynel and epoxy for a boat that stays good looking with less maintenance. Her fine bow will handle a chop with ease, and her semi-displacement hull can be driven up to 17 knots with just 60 horsepower.

Down below is a generous vee berth, followed by a toilet to starboard and a sink & counter to port. A step up brings you to the shelter, with 6′ 3” of headroom. The helm station is to port and to starboard is a “co-pilot” seat with storage under. A luxurious settee extends across the aft end of the cockpit just forward of the motor well and is a perfect place to enjoy the day either underway or at anchor in a quiet cove. Speaking of quiet, TIP YOUR CAP’s motor is in a covered well, which makes engine noise almost negligible.

Some might consider TIP YOUR CAP as a day boat and she’ll work splendidly in that capacity but with her accommodations (galley, head and double berth) below and pilot house above a weekend cruise is very much in the picture as long as simple eating (or dinner reservations) is acceptable fare. A young (or young at heart) and adventurous couple might head off for a week and with curtains around the shelter, even a pair of kids (or grandkids) can be included in the fun.

Solid and laminated Mahogany and Douglas Fir structural members. Breast hook and lower rub rails White Oak Bottom (below waterline) is constructed of two (2) layers of 9mm Meranti marine plywood with a single layer of Dynel cloth set in epoxy. Inside butts of plywood seams are reinforced with fiberglass tape and coated with multiple layers of Petit “Protect “epoxy primer Topsides are of 7/8” x 1 ½” Spanish Cedar Speed Strip with interior single layer of Dynel cloth set in epoxy and exterior double layer of Dynel cloth cut on bias and set in epoxy.

Foredeck is 3 layers of1/4” Okume marine plywood butted to a laminated18mm marine plywood center plank and reinforced with a 3/8” by 9” laminated center-line butt strip on the underside of the deck.  After deck is 3/8”marine plywood All deck areas are over laid with Dynel cloth set in epoxy.  Superstructure is solid mahogany and marine plywood with painted surfaces.  Shelter roof is marine plywood overlaid with Dynel cloth set in Epoxy.
