With the final coats of paint and varnish dry, and the final bill paid in full, we set out in BRENDA KAY on a June delivery to her future home in Virginia. The 5 days it took to get from Eggemogin Reach in Eastern Penobscot Bay to the western shores of Chesapeake Bay was a perfect opportunity to put a brand new custom boat through her paces, while enjoying the beautiful and varied coast. But each night when we pulled into harbors from Scituate to Hampton Roads and saw the local fleets of name brand assembly line boats, a nagging question recurred. Why would you want a production boat; one of hundreds or even thousands of nearly identical vessels, when you could have something unique? Not necessarily a cold molded reproduction of a classic Beals Island Lobsterboat like BRENDA KAY, but a boat designed from scratch, built from scratch, to match your experience at sea, your taste, your height, your vision of a perfect boat.
